The temporary changes that were made in 2020 prove the point - the people who live and work in Reigate simply don't want this kind of thing imposed on us. Just look at the cycle stands that remain in Church Street - no-one uses them and they take away parking bays. the ability to park cars for maybe 30 minutes is hugely beneficial to retailers. Shoppers often need to drive into central Reigate and shop elsewhere than Morrisons. Parking in the multi storey is actually useless and unpleasant for shopping, as is the Priory car park. Taking away on-street parking damages town centre life. Those who plan and impose things like this need to listen to what a community wants. Is a 20mph limited wanted? Some will say yes, but in truth it's not needed for safety reasons, it comes across as diktat. People can't cycle into the town to buy a bag-for-life of food, or goods of any size, they need a car. Let's not boost on-line shopping by making proper retail shopping so difficult. The roads of Reigate are rapidly deteriorating and yet SCC is proposing to spend money on non-essential work. It needs to get its priorities sorted out and get off political bandwagons - will this spending increase uplift walking/cycling? Absolutely not, this a vanity project by desk-bound people who need to get out and talk to real people who use this town.

The long term risks to health from air pollution combined with the climate emergency, needs to be addressed. The car is still king in Reigate, I would question whether these proposals go far enough in nudging people out of cars for the school run, and a mile ‘pop to the shops’.

I supported the last temporary cycle lane in Reigate, so am wondering If this will last more than 3 days. The only positive permanent change here is the 20 mph limits, however this won’t change the number of vehicles passing through the town. It simply means slower polluting vehicles through the main shopping areas. You need to discourage drivers completely by offering alternatives, slowing down approach roads, make it safer for people to walk, cycle to the town centre (not just when in the town centre), ban pavement parking on approach roads. There is so much more that could be done in Reigate, but this is simply adding a few signs, then removing the temporary cycle lane again, whilst blaming it for the congestion and then rinse and repeat a few weeks later. #massivelyunderwhelmed
